The United Nations and partners are supporting the government-led response following deadly typhoon Molave's landfall in central Vietnam, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday.

They have distributed home repair kits, kitchen sets, household and relief kits, food, water purification packets and cash assistance, OCHA said in a release. "The UN country team is developing a response plan and providing support in information management, reporting and resource mobilization."

Nearly 375,000 people have been evacuated and there are millions more without electricity, OCHA said. An estimated 177,000 vulnerable people are in need of urgent aid. An estimated 7.7 million people in central Vietnam have been impacted by flooding from a series of storms earlier this month.

Forty people are reported missing and 15 people reported killed.

Published reports said dozens had died from the typhoon, flooding and landslides.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said this latest storm increased the number of children at risk in the area to well over 2.5 million.

Many schools across central Vietnam have been closed for weeks, a situation already constrained by COVID-19, UNICEF said. The agency is providing emergency help, including water, nutrition, sanitation, and educational assistance.
