Myanmar authorities seized 474.6 tons of illegal timbers across Myanmar in a week, according to a release from the Forest Department under the country's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Thursday.

The seizures were made in the country's regions, states and the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6.

The seized illegal timbers included 70.9 tons of teak, 114.3 tons of hardwood and 289.3 tons of other types of timbers, the release said.

During the period, 53 people were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 53 vehicles and machines.

The seizure marked the latest efforts by the Forest Department to crack down on illegal logging and trading of forest products in the country. Meanwhile, the department has also been committed to implementing tree planting projects.
